Basketball Rules

1. League Structure

• Divisions:

• Rising Stars: Grades 3–4

• Junior Elite: Grades 5–6

• Varsity Prep: Grades 7–8

• Season Duration: 9 weeks, commencing the week of June 7, 2025

• Games: 1 game per week, supplemented by optional skills clinics

• Team Size: Maximum of 10 players per team

2. Game Format

• Quarters:

• Grades 1–5: 4 quarters, 10 minutes each

• Grades 5–8: 4 quarters, 12 minutes each

• Clock: Running clock, stopping for timeouts and injuries

• Timeouts: 2 per half, 1 minute each

• Overtime: 2-minute period if necessary

3. Equipment & Court Specifications

• Ball Size:

• Grades 3–4: 27.5” (Junior)

• Grades 5–6: 28.5” (Intermediate)

• Grades 7–8: 29.5” (Official)

• Goal Height:

• Grades 3–4: 9 feet

• Grades 5–8: 10 feet

• Free Throw Line:

• Grades 3–4: 12 feet

• Grades 5–8: 15 feet

4. Playing Time & Substitutions

• Minimum Play: Each player must participate in at least one full quarter per half - must substitute at 1/2 mark of 1st 2 quarters

• Substitutions: Allowed during dead balls and timeouts

5. Defensive Rules

• Defense Type:

• Man-to-man or zone defense allowed

• Any defense permitted

• Pressing: No pressing until the 3rd quarter- No full-court press until 3rd quarter- or if winning by 20 points at anytime

•Full-court press allowed in the second half

• Full-court press allowed throughout

6. Fouls & Violations

• Personal Fouls: 5 per player; disqualification on the 5th foul

• Team Fouls: Bonus free throws on the 7th team foul per half

• Technical Fouls: Assessed for unsportsmanlike conduct; results in 2 free throws and possession

7. Sportsmanship & Conduct

• Coaches: Limited to two per team on the bench; responsible for player conduct

• Spectators: Expected to exhibit positive behavior; no profanity or derogatory remarks

• Discipline: Unsportsmanlike behavior may result in ejection or suspension

8. Uniform & Equipment

• numbers on back must be large and NOT written or drawn on

• Footwear: Proper basketball shoes are required

• Accessories: No jewelry or accessories allowed during games

9. Additional Guidelines

• Practice: Scheduled at discretion of coach once per week; attendance is encouraged

• Cancellations: Games canceled due to weather will be rescheduled if possible

• Communication: Updates and schedules will be communicated via the EliteVida website and official social media channels
